FAQ

The questions we get asked most.

Awarding bodies, handwriting, GDPR, what happens when Markus gets it wrong. The honest answers.

The product
GCSE Maths and English are live now. Functional Skills launches ready for September 26/27.
Yes. Markus is configured to your awarding body so teachers and students only see content meant for them. We currently support:
GCSE EnglishAQA · Pearson 2.0 · Eduqas · WJEC
GCSE MathsAQA · Pearson Edexcel · Eduqas · OCR
Functional Skills English & MathsCity & Guilds · Pearson Edexcel · NCFE
Yes. Our rule of thumb: if the best human can't read it, neither can Markus or an examiner.
Like any moderator, it can. Teachers can override any mark in the dashboard with one tap. Markus runs triple marking, confidence scoring and hallucination checks, with a justification for every mark, so you can see when, and why, Markus is uncertain.
Plenty, and growing. There's a deep bank of mock exams and self-assessments, and we add new ones continuously, so you won't run out. On top of that, Living Colour lets teachers generate endless practice for learners.
Markus marks the resources published on the platform rather than uploaded papers. That's deliberate: every resource we create is quality assured and built directly to your awarding body's requirements, so we can stand behind the accuracy of the marking. Marking a paper we haven't QA'd would put that guarantee at risk. That said, you can still bring your own material: with Living Colour, our teacher tool, you select any source text and Markus generates exam-style questions for your awarding body, so you keep using your existing source texts and we look after the questions and the marking.
Markus marks what's on the page against the criteria, the same way a moderator would. It doesn't penalise spelling, punctuation and grammar on questions where this isn't assessed, and feedback is written at each learner's reading level.
Teachers can upload on behalf of a learner directly from the platform.
Markus mirrors the real exam. If a learner completes their paper on a computer, they upload the file directly instead of a photo of handwritten work.
Data & security
Yes. EU hosted, fully GDPR compliant, ICO registered. Full Data Processing Agreement available on request.
Just the basics. Learner first name, last name, and email address. That's it.
A data processor. Your organisation remains the data controller, and Markus processes data only on your instructions under our Data Processing Agreement.
Yes. Every organisation assigns Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) to the platform. Markus screens every piece of work uploaded for harmful content, then flags it to your DSLs for review under your own safeguarding policies.
No. Your students' work is never pooled into any training dataset. It's processed for marking, returned to you, and that's it.
Yes. Sign in is through Microsoft or Google single sign-on (SSO), so access uses your existing school credentials and inherits the multi-factor authentication (MFA) your IT team already enforces.
We're certified under the UK Government-backed Cyber Essentials scheme. For ISO 27001, our infrastructure runs on Google Cloud, which holds ISO 27001 certification.
Yes. You can download all your data from the platform as a CSV file. You can also connect using our API keys to feed tools like Power BI and any other data analysis software your organisation uses.
Setup & support
Two ways. The preferred route is Microsoft or Google authentication, so learners sign in with their existing school credentials and your IT team keeps full control of accounts. The alternative is a bulk upload directly into the platform.
Quickly. We can have an organisation live within 48 hours of receiving a purchase order.
Yes. Online onboarding is included. We're based in London and love to do in person onboarding when the location works. For schools and colleges further afield we can arrange in person for a small cost. Day to day support is always there.
Yes. As a platform, Markus gives you the data and evidence an inspection asks for. Beyond that, our team has worked directly alongside colleges through inspections, and we're happy to act as one of your English and maths stakeholders. We'll gladly take a call from inspectors to add clarity. Our team has been through Ofsted inspections before, and our co-founder Dr Michael Smith has served as a nominee, so we know the inspection framework inside out.
